How to properly prepare a digital photo for UK visa application?

When I applied for a visa, I decided to take a photo myself. It seemed simple: my phone had a white background, good lighting, and a good-quality camera. However, it turned out that the photo might not meet the requirements even if all the conditions were met. For example, my first version was rejected because of the wrong size of the face. I didn't have time to shoot again, so I used https://photogov.net/documents/gb-visa-photo/. When you upload a photo, the service automatically adjusts it to the required parameters, removes unnecessary shadows, and checks whether it is suitable for submission. Thanks to this, I could quickly get the photo I wanted without any unnecessary problems.

I often hear that for a visa you can just crop an old photo and submit it. This is not a good idea! Even if the background is white and the size is appropriate, it is important that the face is clear, without highlights and shadows. Plus, if the photo is old, there may be questions, because it should be fresh (no older than a month). So it's better not to take any risks and take a new photo according to all the requirements at once.
